Would you eat a pear shaped like that?
In 2003 a Chinese farmer developed these pears in order to make his fruit stand out in the market. This year he sold almost all of his harvest, about 18,000 pear babies, and he already received orders for 70,000 - 80,000 for 2010! Really? All this hype...over a pear? Well, you can't deny the success... the wee Buddha-looking-things rake in a whopping $7 each. Interestingly enough, this is not the first instance of fiddling around with shaped produce. Disney, for example, has its own greenhouse at EPCOT in Florida where vegetables are grown in the shape of good ol' Mickey Mouse. Sure it looks cute... but is it necessary?
Manipulating nature may be a way to bring in profit, but I think fruits and vegetables are beautiful just as they are. What do you think?
